TO BE APPROVED BY OWNER
In the mid-seventies, Audi had the idea to develop a passenger car with four-wheel drive. This happened following the introduction of the then new Audi 100 in Scandinavia. During the test drives with the Audi 100, Jörg Bensinger, the then test leader and spiritual father of the Audi quattro, drove a Volkswagen Iltis off-road vehicle that was not intended for the road, but precisely for this kind of harsh conditions. This Iltis drove much better under the winter conditions than the exclusive Audi 100, the acceleration and handling of this vehicle put the Audi 100 in the shadow. Bensinger convinced the chairman of the "vehicle development" department, Ferdinand Piëch, that there would be a market for four-wheel drive (street) cars. To revive the somewhat forgotten Audi slogan "Vorsprung durch Technik", a budget was requested from the board of directors to develop an Audi with four-wheel drive. Audi subsequently designed a prototype four-wheel drive based on the Audi 80, with the 100% mechanical four-wheel drive system with an intermediate differential from the DKW Munga. It was known that it was good when on a snow-covered mountain road in Austria, where at the time a snow chain manufacturer was also testing his product, the mouths literally fell open when this Audi 80 with exclusively winter tires literally rushed past the car with snow chains. quattro was born. In March 1980, the Audi quattro Coupé, a sports coupé with turbo engine and four-wheel drive, was presented for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show and received as a true sensation by the trade journalists. At that time, Audi actively participated in rallying and four-wheel drive offered the better traction. Precisely because of this participation in the toughest rallies and the large number of victories therein, Audi also demonstrated the reliability of the quattro drive. For example, in the famous rally to the top of the American mountain Pikes Peak, Audi started four times and won the event three times in record time. There was also some success on the circuit. In 1988, Audi won the motor sport class for muscle cars with the quattro the Trans-Am Series. In 1990 and 1991, Audi won the DTM championship.
